Company profile

NIKON CORPORATION provides products, services and solutions worldwide based on advanced opto-electronics and precision technologies developed over more than 100 years, supported by a flexible Monodzukuri manufacturing system across the Nikon Group. Its Industrial Solutions Business Unit is a major part of Nikon's B2B operations and was formed in 2024 through the merger of the Digital Solutions Business Unit and the Industrial Metrology Business Unit. The Industrial Solutions strategy emphasizes long-term cooperation with customers worldwide and cradle-to-grave business relationships for co-creating metrology solutions. Rather than limiting its role to equipment delivery, the business unit develops integrated, optimized, ultra-high-precision solutions that can be customized for customer requirements and improved together with customers after implementation. Digitalization is used to connect Quality 4.0 with Industry 4.0 by integrating metrology equipment into manufacturing environments so digital measurement data can be fed back automatically to optimize production in a closed loop. Automation supplies data for analysis with less dependence on human variability, while artificial intelligence is increasingly used to analyze large data volumes and correlate quality-control data with component CAD models to support accuracy, repeatability, reproducibility and traceability. Nikon's industrial metrology approach is built around three core technologies, Laser Radar, X-ray CT and video measuring systems, which can be combined with robotics and other automation options and are supported by precision mechanics and optical technologies. Automated quality-control applications include Laser Radar gap-and-flush inspection at the end of automotive production lines, X-ray CT inspection inside lithium-ion batteries during manufacturing, and NEXIV video measuring combined with automatic wafer handling to inspect chips and correct process drift. Within the Industrial Solutions Business Unit, more than 250 people work in research and development worldwide, representing close to 10 per cent of turnover, with development focused on measurement and inspection solutions for specific user requirements. The business unit's future direction combines physical and cyber-space cooperation with global customers, while the Nikon Group also aligns its Corporate Social Responsibility priorities with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and manages sustainability activities across the Group. Nikon expanded into optical 3D metrology through the acquisition of Metris in 2009, after which Nikon Metrology broadened its measuring portfolio for applications ranging from miniature electronics to large aircraft. The Industrial Solutions portfolio spans X-ray and CT systems, Laser Radar measuring systems, video measuring systems, optical manual measuring instruments, industrial microscopy and industrial lenses, with product availability varying by region.

Exhibits

High-precision measurement and inspection during production are central to advanced manufacturing, and NIKON CORPORATION provides systems for demanding quality-control applications across industry. X-ray and CT systems provide non-destructive insight into components and specimens so users can visualize, analyze and measure complex internal geometry and surfaces, while Laser Radar supports large-volume non-contact measurement in automated or semi-automated installations and CNC video measuring supports high-accuracy, high-speed dimensional measurement. Nikon's X-ray and CT systems use in-house microfocus X-ray sources up to 450 kV for 3D component analysis from small connectors to large castings, with automation supporting quality control across R&D, failure analysis and manufacturing. The VOXLS 40 Series provides configurable large-envelope X-ray and CT systems that can support multiple sources and detectors for demanding inspection requirements. The VOXLS 30 Series is automation-ready in an efficient footprint and is available with 225 kV, 320 kV or 450 kV source energy for small to midsized samples from low to high density. The VOXLS 20 Series combines a large CT envelope with a dual-source 160 kV / 225 kV configuration and a set of Scan Enhancements for laboratory or production environments. The XT H Series supports high-resolution microfocus CT inspection for R&D and failure analysis from small plastic connectors to aluminium castings, while the XT V Series supports interactive radiography or detailed CT scans of PCB boards, electronic components and small parts. Nikon also provides non-destructive X-ray and CT inspection services for one-off or regular batch scanning, supported by more than 35 years of experience, and its CT systems use in-house designed and built microfocus sources up to 450 kV. Automation options can be configured for first-article inspection, quality control or 100% inspection in production environments. The VOXLS 30 Series supports both R&D laboratories and production lines, can use automated robotics and Industry 4.0 integrations, and is built around a metrology-grade granite-based manipulator with rigid steel towers for repeatable measurement. VOXLS 30 C 225, 30 C 320 and 30 C 450 provide maximum source energies of 225 kV, 320 kV and 450 kV respectively so users can select an inspection configuration for parts of different densities and sizes. A motorized Focus to Imager Distance allows sub-millimetre adjustment of the source-to-detector distance, and reducing that distance increases X-ray photon flux, shortens scan time and raises signal-to-noise ratio for improved image quality. Scan-envelope enhancement modes include X.Tend Helical CT, Panel Shift and Pixel Split CT for larger or irregularly shaped parts and for inspection approaches normally associated with larger CT systems. The metrology-grade manipulator combines a granite base, rigid steel towers, high-precision motors and linear encoders to improve mechanical and thermal stability, positioning accuracy and measurement repeatability across the scan volume. A 1.3-metre-tall glass outer door with manipulator interlock and two internal video cameras supports object positioning and enclosure visibility, including when the inner radiation-safety doors are closed and X-rays are operating. For Quality 4.0 production, robotic loading and unloading and rapid transfer doors can be combined with Nikon's Automation OPC UA Interface to produce repeatable, operator-independent automated CT workflows. Automotive applications range from large engine castings to electronics, and the VOXLS 30 Series can be used on the production line or in R&D with penetration energy suited to different part types. Battery applications extend from individual cells to fully assembled battery packs, while electronics applications include defect detection in BGAs, crack detection in bond wires and layer-by-layer evaluation of larger electronic assemblies. Aerospace applications can support trend analysis and performance tracking following ASTM E2737 with graphical results in automated processes, while metals applications include shrinkage inspection and porosity measurement in metal additive-manufactured parts. The same platform is also used for medical-device inspection and research applications that include core samples, fossils, composite materials, advanced alloys, and plant and animal sciences. VOXLS 30 C 225 uses a 225 kV Microfocus Rotating.Target 2.0 or 225 kV Microfocus Reflection Target with a flat-panel detector, a maximum scan volume of 620mm (Ø) × 1025mm (H), a maximum central sample mass of 50kg and a system mass of 6,950kg. VOXLS 30 C 320 uses a 320 kV Microfocus Reflection Target with Penta Source Functionality available, a flat-panel detector, a maximum scan volume of 610mm (Ø) × 1050mm (H), a maximum central sample mass of 100kg and a system mass of 10,350kg. VOXLS 30 C 450 uses either a 450 kV Microfocus Rotating Target or 450 kV Microfocus Reflection Target, supports a flat-panel detector and Nikon CLDA, and has a maximum scan volume of 610mm (Ø) × 1050mm (H), a maximum central sample mass of 100kg and a system mass of 10,350kg. The 225 kV Rotating.Target 2.0 provides 3-times greater power density for faster scans and better signal-to-noise ratio without loss of resolution, with cooling designed for continuous operation at 450 W full power. Offset.CT can scan objects wider than the detector in one acquisition and can increase magnification and resolution for smaller wide objects, while Panel Shift uses horizontal detector movement to scan wider objects and to raise magnification for small to medium objects. X.Tend Helical CT scans tall objects in one acquisition, reducing cone-beam and multi-scan stitching artefacts and allowing higher magnification for improved resolution. Automated X-ray inspection can begin with a review of production needs, proceed through sample benchmarking and extend from personnel training to AI learning and full production integration through Nikon's Automation OPC UA Interface. The systems use serviceable components including open X-ray tubes that can be disassembled, maintained and repaired, with regular maintenance including filament and O-ring changes, manipulator greasing, alignments and software updates. Related CT technologies include AI Reconstruction for AI-powered image enhancement, Scatter Correction CT for physics-based correction of X-ray scatter artefacts, and Tilted CT laminography for faster quality-control inspection of planar, flat and high-aspect-ratio components.
