Oriole is a photonic networking company developing disruptive technologies for AI/ML and high-performance computing (HPC) transforming data centre networking. Oriole’s core innovation, PRISM (Photonic Routing Infrastructure for Scalable Models), is the world’s first pure photonic network for AI. Built from the ground up for distributed AI workloads, PRISM is a full-stack architecture which replaces traditional electronic switching with a deterministic optical fabric, delivering predictable, high-performance communication at scale. PRISM removes the bottlenecks of electrical packet switching, enabling higher GPU utilisation by eliminating contention and idle time while maintaining consistent performance as clusters grow. Its passive photonic routing core requires no power or cooling, reducing network energy overhead and infrastructure complexity, up to 81% less network power, and 75% smaller footprint. The architecture is designed to enable near-peak AI-cluster utilisation, compared with the 30–50% utilisation commonly achieved in conventional packet-switched environments. Oriole recently deployed PRISM in the UK ARIA Scaling Inference Lab (the UK’s novel AI hardware test bed) in collaboration with AMD, demonstrating how next-generation network fabrics can overcome performance, latency, and energy constraints in modern AI infrastructure. This marks the company’s first commercial deployment achieved within three years of founding. Acknowledged in the UK government’s £1. 1 billion AI Hardware Plan, Oriole has also delivered innovation projects with Innovate UK, resulting in an alpha photonic integrated circuit enabling ultra-fast, multi-dimensional switching.
