Company profile
CORNERSTONE is an open-source, licence-free silicon photonics rapid prototyping foundry. Our open-source model lowers the barriers to innovation in photonic integrated circuits (PICs), giving researchers and innovators the freedom to design, fabricate, and test ideas. Founded in 2014, CORNERSTONE is UKs leading silicon photonics hub hosted by the University of Southampton, University of Glasgow, and the UK’s Science and Technology Facilities Council. Our diverse team of experts brings together knowledge and a passion for enabling next-generation photonic solutions. We believe that groundbreaking technology should be accessible, collaborative, and transformative. We understand that bringing technologies to life is often slowed down by complexity, long lead times, and lack of access to specialist facilities. CORNERSTONE addresses these challenges by providing a rapid, transparent, and flexible route to silicon photonics prototyping. Our services allow users to trial concepts, validate designs, and accelerate the journey from research to applications enabled by our deep-UV lithography capabilities. CORNERSTONE is more than a foundry. We are building a collaborative community around silicon photonics — offering training, networking opportunities, and knowledge sharing to ensure our users are supported at every stage. Through partnerships, events, and accelerator programmes, we are working to develop skills, encourage diversity, and strengthen the photonics ecosystem. By combining world-class academic expertise with an open-access model, CORNERSTONE provides an environment for experimentation and growth. Whether your goal is to advance research, develop a product, or explore new applications of silicon photonics, we are here to provide the tools, support, and community to help you succeed.
